Container platforms are used to manage and orchestrate containers. Containers are simple processes that are given their own environment through features in the Linux kernel without being virtualized. This allows processes to be started quickly and leanly while still retaining the benefits of encapsulation as with VMs. So you can easily launch hundreds of containers on a server, which would be nearly impossible with virtual machines. That is, when we talk about containers, we are generally talking about Linux processes.
The container platforms (also clusters) can be run on-premise or on cloud platforms. In addition to hyperscaler solutions (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud), there are numerous on-premise providers.
