A dedicated server is a type of Internet hosting where the customer rents an entire server (the physical device) and does not share it with others (unlike virtual servers). This is more flexible than shared hosting, as companies have full control over the server(s), including the choice of operating system, hardware, etc. This is often coupled with full access to the physical hardware down to the level of BIOS settings.
This hosting variant promises more security and availability. At the same time, the full control gained in this way is offset by the effort that now has to be expended entirely by the company itself. This in turn requires a higher level of know-how.
As with other forms of hosting, the server location is theoretically freely selectable: Nevertheless, the customer must still weigh up questions of data storage. How does the provider handle data protection? What is relevant - DSG or GDPR? Where is the data located? Is it hosted in Switzerland (data is held locally), "swiss hosting" (access is only possible from Switzerland) or is the data located abroad? In the case of foreign data storage, the question of legal and regulatory consequences arises.
Solutions from Switzerland
Below you will find a list of Swiss providers. Clarify clearly your needs for data storage:
Data in a non-EU country (check data protection carefully in each case)
Data in the EU (DSGVO applies)
Data in Switzerland (DSG obligation, DSGVO possible)
"swiss hosting" (DSG obligation, DSGVO possible, only variant that blocks direct access by foreign authorities)
