Standard Software Meets Custom Development

Wednesday 01.07.2026

Standard software provides the foundation for digital business processes in many organisations. At the same time, every company has its own requirements that cannot always be addressed with out-of-the-box functionality. In many cases, the challenge is therefore not to replace an existing solution, but to extend it in a targeted and sustainable way.

A good example is the VOLTA Service Desk, developed by Karakun in close collaboration with the Burkhalter Group. The solution seamlessly integrates a customer portal, ticket management and service processes with VOLTA, the Swiss industry software platform for electrical installation companies.

Instead of introducing yet another standalone application, the project resulted in an integrated solution that complements existing workflows. Service requests are captured centrally, processed efficiently and documented transparently, while all relevant information is available where it is needed in day-to-day operations.

The project demonstrates how established Swiss software products and custom software development complement each other. Rather than replacing the existing platform, VOLTA was extended with functionality tailored to Burkhalter's specific business requirements. The result is a solution that supports daily operations while remaining flexible enough to evolve over time.

At the same time, the project highlights another characteristic of Swiss software: long-term collaboration. When customers, product companies and software engineering partners work closely together, they create solutions that can adapt to changing business needs and continue to deliver value for many years.
